Default Noise Reduction Software

Does anyone have a recomendation on a Noise Reduction Software that works well with RAW or DNG type files? I wish there was a plug in for Lightroom.

I use Noise Ninja, and I like it a lot. I also hear that Neat Image is a good tool as well.

If you use Paint Shop Pro it has a built in noise reduction function that allows you to exempt certain colors. Version X3 just was released and I don't have it yet but X2 works as well as many of the programs mentioned here. With X3 being released X2 can be purchased, on line, for under $50.00 US and if past practice prevails X3 will be discounted in a couple of months.

NOTE X2 does the conversion before editing also but my understanding is that X3 works with the RAW files.

There are great reviews of both Noise Ninja and Neat Image at http://www.thelightsright.com/view/tlr_reviews.
Noise Ninja has a LR plugin, but it converts to tiff before doing its thing. I don't do tiff unless a client requests it - I keep stuff as raw and psd files. Both NN and NI have plugins for PS that show up in the filter menu.
I have both Noise Ninja and Neat Image and prefer Neat Image as it allows more control over the process.
Cheers!

A word of caution about PSP 13. The first reviews are not good.

Be sure to read the comments at the bottom.

I am a huge fan of PSP, but will wait a while before I upgrade. Not sure if the 30 day free trail is still available.

It does have something interesting new features if it worked.

I use (rarely) Noise Ninja. The current plan is to get Nik's DFine 2. I love their user interface.

While I normally use ACR for RAW conversions, lately I have been using Canon's Digital Photo Pro with the 50D (for high ISO shots) because the "standard" NR setting available in the camera menu tags the RAW file and enables awesome automated NR once the image is viewed at 100% in post.

If I buy DFine 2, hopefully I can get the same quality NR that DPP provides and use ACR for high ISO files. I believe Nik offers a plugin for Lightroom too.

I have used neatimage, and a noise reduction filter from 'imagenomic' and found that they are both quite good at achieving the results I am after. They may not suit all usersm but they give an end result that I'm happy with.

There MAY be something wrong with X3 but, at the time those reviews were written, the new version had not been out long enough for anyone to have read the instructions. I will say that the more memory you have in your computer the better most new programs will run, even 32 bit ones, because all the "background" programs in the 64 bit operating systems can operate outside the first 2 gb leaving more room for shoving images around.

PSP X2 has the same problem with 32 bit systems. I run XP, I am maxed on ram and get "out of memory" problems, mostly with scanned files which I can make very large. I think I'll have to change operating systems to stop the problem.

PSP X2 has excellent noise reduction functions and works with raw files.

When you say very large files is there a reason to scan more than 300-400 ppi?
I very seldom print anything higher than 300 dpi which on an 8x10 would be 2400x3000 pixel prints.

I have been experimenting with 10-50 meg scanned files and the manipulation of them. I have a printer that will print 300 dpi in color and 600 dpi in b&w on 36" sheets and want to find the largest print size I can get with good detail. My scanner will scan 24,000 dpi.

I could probably go read somebody else's data in an article, but I am an Ingeniero (Engineer) and like to find out for myself.
